Déjà vu

March 16, 2010 (Tuesday)

With the option of following the interstate (Hwy 10) or heading off on some “blue highway,” we decided for the latter and took Hwys 60, 71 and 89 which eventually lead to Prescott, AZ. The temps along the southern tier of the southwest were approaching what we Eurekans consider “hot,” so one of our motives was to seek a moderate climate. Also, we thought it would be fun to visit the site of Matt’s first paid teaching job at Prescott College, a small liberal arts college with an enrollment of about 500. On our way, we stopped at the town of Aguila where there was an open-air market, with predominately Hispanic vendors (live chickens in cages, fresh vegetables and fruit, and genuine cowhide boots.) We bought a few items and enjoyed the little Mexico experience, including some loud salsa music being piped in over loud speakers. Then we climbed from the desert floor to an elevation of 6100 feet (with snow in north-facing hillsides) and dropped down into Prescott. This is an old mining town with a number of very quaint, historic saloons (see photo) and some very upscale homes and condos for those wanting to escape the Phoenix heat.  We plan to spend two nights here to just relax and enjoy the comfortable weather (66-32 range) and then head for Sedona on Thursday.
